Cultivating Healthy Connections
Immigrant Youth Leading Change
Immigrant Youth Leading Change is an interactive and engaging session to better understand how all people can become part of the change to end domestic and gender-based violence. During the session, participants will explore the root causes of domestic and gender-based violence to gain an understanding of how and why abuse happens. We will examine and challenge common myths and misconceptions that exist about abuse that reflect some common experiences of newcomer, immigrant, and refugee youth. The session will provide an overview of how to recognize abusive dynamics, how to safely intervene when we suspect abuse is taking place, and how to access community support.

The Process

Phase 1
We collaborated with community partners and stakeholders to gather feedback on the existing Leading Change curriculum.
Phase 2
Youth will participate in open and closed workshops hosted by community organizations, facilitated by trained members of ACWS and Maskan. At the end of these workshops, interested youth can apply to become facilitators.
Phase 3
Selected youth facilitators will attend a three-day Train-the-Trainer workshop and receive an honorarium of $500. After completing the training, they will host two workshops in their communities to earn an additional honorarium of $500. The total honorarium amounts to $1,000.

How we help?
In collaboration with Alberta Council of Women’s Shelter (ACWS), we have created the Immigrant Youth Leading Change Expansion Pack – another expansion of your tool-kit to help provide safety, support families, and strengthen communities across Alberta. This pack was developed to speak specifically to the experiences of Immigrant, Newcomer, and Refugee youth. Designed with the input and advice of over 20 community organizations, this pack can help Immigrant, Newcomer, and Refugee youth interrupt inter-generational cycles of violence and start important and culturally relevant conversations among friends, family, and community members
